Immigration, a General Statement I feel that the U.S. immigration system is in need of reform. It is important to make a clear distinction between illegal and legal immigration. We must crack down on all illegal immigration. I feel we should not reward illegal behavior with citizenship. As for legal immigrants, I favor strong sponsorship requirements and other policies, which aim to ensure that immigrants enter this country as productive members of society in pursuit of opportunity, not public assistance. As Americans, we must not forget that many of our forefathers were immigrants who had a strong sense of personal responsibility and who established the strong foundations of individualism which have made this country what it is today.

Immigration, a General Statement     Current immigration law is not working. I support stronger border enforcement and efforts that would crack down on illegal human trafficking. A bipartisan effort in the Senate, which I believe provides a good platform for this important discussion, would strengthen national security, fix the current visa system, improve economic stability, and provide an opportunity for some presently undocumented workers to gain legal status.

Notwithstanding claims that significant new funding has been authorized for homeland security, modest increases in border patrol officers, customs agents and Immigration and Naturalization Service agents will not change the reality on the ground. Our air passenger, air cargo, seaport and sea cargo security systems are not sufficiently upgraded. The security of our nuclear and private chemical production facilities needs greater attention. If we want these agencies to be more effective in preventing infiltration of our borders by terrorists and in tracking suspects who are already here. We need to allocate the necessary funds for hiring and training.
