Tancredo: Small businesses contribute over 47 percent of all sales in the country and are responsible for 50 percent of the private gross domestic product (GDP). I believe that small businesses are the life-blood of our economy and that we should do everything we can to protect them from unnecessary government regulation. Tancredo: Small business owners face a tax and regulatory system that overburdens and demoralizes them. Government is meant to be the servant of the people, yet the existing federal regulatory and tax policies unfairly act as judge, jury and master of honest, hard-working Americans.Today, there are some 53 federal departments and agencies employing over 127,000 federal employees that spend time writing and enforcing federal regulations. The total cost to the economy of all regulation has been estimated to be over $700 billion. This is a hidden tax of more than $6,800 per year per American family and equal to about 4.5 percent of the entire federal spending budget.I believe that Congress should reduce government interference in the lives of our nation’s small business owners by enhancing the accountability of the federal regulatory system and focusing on smarter decisions that will maximize benefits and minimize burdens.
