Tancredo: Since arriving in Congress, I have closely monitored the conflict taking place in Sudan and have been a proponent of the southern opposition movement. The most recent phase of the war in Sudan began in 1983, and has claimed the lives of nearly two million Sudanese. This war is being fought by the Islamic northern regime in Khartoum against the mostly Christian and animist population in the south. Besides the usual devastation that comes during times of war, this conflict has an even more sinister component to it, namely slavery. Raiders, who fight alongside the northern regime, have enslaved southern women and children as they carried out attacks in the south. I supported the actions of fourth grade students at Highline Community School, led by their teacher Barb Vogel, who raised money to free southern Sudanese from their human bondage. These brave students raised nearly $100,000 in their redemption efforts, and helped to free over 1000 slaves. Source: www.teamtancredo.com Date: 12/05/2007 |
